Meet a Coworker: Nick Nguyen
Although we have a Keurig coffee maker that brews individual cups of coffee and cocoa, sometimes a person just wants a steaming mug of tea. Up until a few days ago, your only options at SPUR were Lipton black and a few bags of sad-looking chamomile tea. That’s why we were thrilled when coworker Nick Nguyen brought in three flavors of loose leaf tea for us to share, as well as a special pot for making a good old “cuppa” by the, er, cup. Nick runs the Tea Garden and Steepery Tea Bar, a chain of six tea shops in the Twin Cities and Madison, Wisconsin. When not visiting the Steepery locations, he splits his time between his office in St. Paul and SPUR. We took a moment to catch up with Nick and get his thoughts on his business, tea, and coworking.
What do the Steepery and the Tea Garden serve?
“We sell bubble tea, which a sweeter, more dessert-y drink that’s made with tea, and hot and iced tea in over 50 flavors. Customers can also buy loose-leaf tea in bulk to brew at home.”
What do you like about tea?
“It’s good for you. There are tons of varieties, and each has different health properties and flavors. For example, green and black tea can help you focus without a crazy coffee buzz.”
If you had to pick, what are your favorite blends right now?
“I really like these jasmine green tea pearls that unfurl when you brew them, [as well as] this South American tea called guayusa. It has lots of caffeine—about as much as a cup of coffee—but it’s really smooth-tasting and doesn’t give you jitters.”
How did you decide to become a SPUR member?
“I wanted a place where there were interesting people doing interesting things. I was familiar with coworking since had visited CoCo…I was excited that Northfield had this resource too.”
A big thank-you to Nick for sitting down and talking to us. You can find more about the Steepery here. We hope you’ll take some time this week to stop in, have a cup of tea (or coffee, if you prefer), and give SPUR a whirl (your first day is always free—and totally non-obligatory). If you have any questions, you can always give us a call at 507-649-1810.
