SPUR Member Spotlight: Monica Irwin
We have another new member at SPUR! Her name is Monica, and we sure are excited to have her coworking here. There’s nothing like having a new, smiling face around the office! Monica has joined SPUR to work on her business, Budding Farmers.
Budding Farmers works with kids, pre-K through elementary school, and teaches them about healthy fruits and vegetables through the local farmers and farmer markets. Monica has built a fun, take-home curriculum where children can make recipes, create fun art projects, and can get involved with the local farmer’s market. To learn more, we sat down at talked with her for a little bit.
How did you get started with your business?
“For about 5 or so years, I’ve been involved in the healthy food farming movement around this area. I’ve owned and operated my own farm. I’ve managed a teaching farm; I’ve managed the Northfield Farmer’s Market. Lot’s of different experiences have brought me to creating this curriculum called Budding Farmer’s program. The idea is that all farmers and all markets want to teach kids, their shoppers, and their members about healthy food, but they don’t have enough time to do so because they are farming sun up, sun down, etc. So, I created a program that fills that void so they can offer a really well rounded product to their people.”
So, do you work directly with kids then?
“I do. I mostly work with the farmers and the markets. But, I have special events where I visit the farmers market and teach kids activities, or have Budding Farmers field days where we go out to the farm and teach farming activities to children. So, I’m expanding that area. The Budding Farmers program itself is more of a take-home curriculum that families can do with their children.”
What’s a fun fact about yourself?
“I’m expecting a baby girl in October! That’s a fun fact!”
